Big Idea: Art To Create Public Awareness
Enduring Understandings: As we all know, the society we inhabit is not perfect and has many issues from poverty to bullying, gay rights, abortion, and more. Students would benefit from researching a social issue that bears importance to them, forming their own opinions, and then making a positive impact on their peers using art. Researching and understanding a specific social issue in depth will allow students to understand their own personal morals and realize what really matters to them as an individual. This lesson will aid adolescents in growing into an adult because they will be presented with real life issues and facts, which they will use to formulate their own opinions.

· What characterizes a social issue?
· Why would an artist create a public artwork?
· Why is it important for the public to be aware of various social issues?
Background Information: Students will be expected to have basic knowledge of various social issues. Students will be expected to research their social issue of choice in depth and have a good understanding of Shepard Fairey’s work; what he creates, why he creates it. Students will be expected to plan accordingly with brainstorming and sketches. The students will be expected to grow conceptually, technically, and artistically from this lesson. The knowledge of stenciling will be gained from the project. Students will be expected to act maturely and take the project seriously considering the age level. A decent amount of time is expected to be allotted to the project.
