Assignment Sheet: Questioning Social Issues Through Art
Project: Choose a social issue of personal meaning to draw awareness to by creating a stylized work based on Shepard Fairey’s art, which will be strategically displayed within the school to be viewed by the school’s inhabitants. Your work will include symbols and possibly words, which will give your viewers context clues as to what you are attempting to portray.
Essential Questions:
· Why are stencils useful?
· What characterizes a social issue?
· Why would an artist create a public artwork?
· Why is it important for the public to be aware of various social issues?
Objectives:
· Create a visually interesting artwork that mimics the style of Shepard Fairey’s work and grabs the attention of the school’s inhabitants in order to create awareness for the chosen social issue.
· Explore the method of stenciling which mimic’s the process of how Shepard Fairey creates a design and then prints multiple reproductions of the design.
· Demonstrate knowledge of Shepard Fairey’s work and conceptual meanings behind his work through the written exit slip activity.
· Show adequate knowledge of the specific chosen social issue through a 5-minute introduction about their artwork and social issue as well as how they correlate.
Things to keep in mind while designing your artwork:
· Composition
· Colors

· Words
· Positive and negative space
Due Dates: (actual dates would be inserted for real lesson)
· Your four different thumbnail sketches of at least two different social issues are to be finished by the end of the first class period
· Final project is due 30 minutes into the fourth class period spent on project, the last 45 minutes of class will be allotted to a class critique.
Vocabulary Words:

Social Issue- a controversial issue that relates to people's personal lives and interactions
Composition- the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art or a photograph, as distinct from the subject of a work
Negative Space- the space around and between the subject of an artwork
Positive Space- the area or part of an artwork’s composition that the subject occupies
