Caitlin Gold Lesson REflection
A. Self-Reflection:
From this lesson, students will not only gain the knowledge of creating and applying stencils, but also the intellectual depth to create a personal opinion. Students are not only learning about art though this lesson, but also society. Throughout this lesson, students will also gain knowledge of contemporary artist, Shepard Fairey and the stylistic approach he takes to creating his artwork.
The amount of detail required for the lesson plan was shocking. At first, I was a bit surprised at the tremendous amount of detailed planning that came along with writing this lesson, but once I began to attempt to make the actual project and bring the whole lesson together, I realized how useful the extra attention paid to detail was. After writing this lesson plan, I truly understand what a teacher’s job really entails when it comes to the planning of classes and how much they plan.
The most enjoyable part of creating this lesson for me was creating the materials that are printed and distributed to the class because these documents are what really brought the lesson to life for me. The lesson outline felt so formal and distant from a classroom so the second I got to create handouts is when the lesson came to life for me- and that was the most exciting part.
The part of the lesson plan that struck me as the most time consuming was the Sequence of Activities/ Organizer. Although it was the most time consuming and most detailed section, I feel it is also the most tentative. I felt as though I was grouping the students and their progress together as a whole, but in reality, students will all work at different paces on this project no matter how much I plan. I feel that for the most part, the Organizer and lesson plan are as close as possible to realistic expectations, and the rest is about being a flexible and ready-for-anything teacher.
